The Meaning of 108 Prayer Beads
In Tibetan Buddhism, mala beads are used to count mantras and prayers. A full mala commonly contains 108 beads, creating a steady rhythm for practice: one bead, one recitation, one return of attention.
Bodhi & the Symbolism of Awakening
Bodhi is closely associated with awakening and enlightenment in Buddhist tradition. Bodhi malas are therefore especially meaningful for meditation, mantra recitation and practices centered on awareness, compassion and inner clarity.
Symbolic Styles
Monkey King: courage, resourcefulness and perseverance.
Blessed Bodhi: a more traditional devotional style centered on the 108-bead mala.
Dry / Yellow Chalcedony: warm natural stone accents with a calm, contemplative character.
Shoushan Stone: a stone with a long place in Chinese carving and decorative arts.
Classic Bodhi: a simpler form for meditation and daily practice.
Agate Pixiu / Lucky Pixiu: Pixiu is an auspicious symbol associated with protection, good fortune and prosperity.
Silver-Tone Monkey King: a cooler-toned variation of the Monkey King style.
How to Use Your Mala
Hold the mala comfortably in one hand and move one bead at a time with each mantra, prayer or breath. If your chosen style includes a distinct guru or marker bead, begin beside it and use it to mark the completion of a full round.
You do not need to be Buddhist to use a mala. It can be part of faith, meditation, breath counting, reflection or simply a more intentional daily ritual.
Care
Keep the mala away from prolonged water exposure, perfume, lotions and harsh chemicals. Wipe stone and metal accents with a soft dry cloth. With regular handling, Bodhi beads may gradually deepen in tone and develop more character over time.
Meaning & Practice
Mala and prayer beads create a tactile rhythm for mantra, prayer, breath awareness and meditation. Move one bead at a time with each repetition or breath, allowing the motion to bring attention back to the present moment.
